All subscriptions, free trial or otherwise, must be cancelled at least 24hrs prior to expiry - as otherwise you will be charged. Subscriptions do not end automatically.
You should note that trial subscriptions end immediately upon cancellation - and do not continue for the balance of the unused trial period. By contrast, a paid subscription when cancelled will continue to be accessible until the paid subscription period expires.
