welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community.
Seems the firmware updates automatically when AirPods are connected to a device with the most recent software version.
Eg: About iOS 16 Updates - Apple Support (says iOS 16.4.1 is the latest)
It can take some time for the update to complete using iPhone and iPad, yet can be quicker if using a Mac.

"If you don't have an Apple device nearby, you can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update your firmware".
