iCloud Drive files very very slow to open

Especially a batch of scanned photographs I stored in a Pictures folder in iCloud Drive. Not Photos Library, just a regular folder with pictures that open in Preview. Each one takes several minutes to open. My internet connection is normal speed for everything else like opening web pages or getting mail. Yes all my software is kept updated. The iMac is about 4 years old and running all the most recent versions.

Troubleshooting Lagging iCloud Sync:

Some Things you Can Try:

A. Single Out this User:

See what happens when you create a new Administrator user. Log in to it, seeing if anything is different. If it works, then it is something misconfigured in this current user.

B. Remove Login Items:

Go To: System Preferences > Users & Groups > Click your Username > Login Items > Rid of Terminal, and remove any unnecessary items.

C. Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for the keyboard) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM.

D. Try Safe Mode:

[Hold Down shift key] upon boot. In Safe Mode, corrupted system setting files (caches), are intentionally fixed.

  1. Boot: in Safe Mode
  2. Log In: as Same User
  3. Wait: 30 seconds
  4. Shut Down: the Mac
  5. Wait: 30 seconds
  6. Boot: the Mac normally
  7. Log In: as Same User
  8. See if can get this to work

For the past year, I have encountered the same problem. Files that are stored in the iCloud, sometimes no more than one 8x10 page of type, take too long to open. It is not my internet speed which is 145Mb download and 35.2 upload and I should not have to open in safe mode to view my files. This is becoming very disruptive of my work and I think Apple should be able to explain this and address it, especially because we pay to store our documents in the cloud.

I was the OP on this thread. I went through a lot of technical steps with Apple phone support because much of what was recommended here was beyond my skill set. Including completely wiping the computer and setting it up as new. I also took the iMac in twice for physical evaluation for the problem and both times it was pronounced in perfect health. I finally threw up my hands in despair and purchased a brand new M3 iMac right when they came out. Solved the problem completely. Same iCloud, same network, same isp. Even the biggest files open in an instant. I now believe my old unit had some hardware issue that was difficult to detect.
