Hey frustrated_again-2023,

Thanks for the update. If you’re seeing error -54, this does not indicate that you need to install 3rd party software, instead it’s the opposite, you might have 3rd party security software interfering with the sync process. We’d suggest temporarily removing any 3rd party security software, attempting to sync, and if successful, feel free to add that software back if you need it.

For more info, and for additional steps to take to resolve this error, please review these steps:

Consolidate the media files in your computer
The media files in the Music app or iTunes library might be stored in several locations. Try consolidating your files into one library.

Check for issues with third-party security software
Some third-party software, including security software, can interfere with the sync process between your computer and your device. Change your security software's setupand see if it fixes the issue.

Sync a small amount of content
Sync only a small amount of content at a time. Add more content until you see the error again. By doing this, you'll identify the content that causes the issue.

Delete and re-download content
If the issue happens with content from the iTunes Store, delete and then redownload the apps and delete and then redownload music. Or, download the apps and download music directly to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Delete and re-import content
If the content isn't from the iTunes Store, delete and then re-import it from the original source.

Remove PDF files from the sync process
This issue might happen when you try to transfer iTunes apps purchases or transfer iTunes music purchases from your iOS or iPadOS device to your computer. This might also happen when you try to sync with Apple Books, because it uses the same process. If so, there might be a problem with a PDF file saved to the Books app on your iOS device.

To fix the issue, use the Share option in the Books app on your device to email the PDF to yourself. This saves a copy of the PDF in your email account and shares it with the email address you choose, which can be accessed from your computer. Then, remove the PDF file from your device.

This is all outlined here: If you see error -54 when you sync with your computer - Apple Support

We hope this helps out.

Take care!

Hello frustrated_again-2023,

If you have an iTunes library from a newer version of iTunes, updating iTunes should resolve the issue. You can learn how to update it here: Update to the latest version of iTunes for Windows 10 - Apple Support

These steps should help:

If you downloaded iTunes from Apple's website
1. Open iTunes.
2. From the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window, choose Help > Check for Updates.
3. Follow the prompts to install the latest version.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply ace1018. I have done what you suggest. I have gone as far as uninstalling itunes, then downloading and installing the latest version (surprise it wasn't on the itunes site) but I still get that error 54.

The research I've done for this error seems to want me to install a third party software, not interested and don't trust. I should not have this much trouble trying to work with a software that was designed for this purpose.

iTunes can't open because the library file was created by a newer version
