I have an account in itunes under one user id or email address. I recently changed my apple user id or email address to a new one.
now i do not have access to my original account when trying to backup my iphone to itunes. Under account it still has my old email address.

Did you create a second account instead of simply changing the email address for the old one?
Here's how you change the email address you use for your Apple ID:

4. Choose Change Apple ID.
