"Software update is required to connect to your iOS device" and "Can't install" error

So the Catalina Mac OS error about not being able to restore an iPad has

apparently never been addressed by Apple?

Why?

Why put out an update that fails and then never fix it?

I understand if you do not want to update the older MacOS to support the

newer hardware, but if you take the time to create the patch and installer why

not take a few minutes to fix the the failed install or here is an idea withdraw the

update and advise users it is just not possible?

Another addition to @Grant's excellent advice is to boot into Safe Mode to see whether the update will install. If it does install while booted into Safe Mode, then it most likely means you have some third party software installed which is interfering with the normal operation of macOS. Typical culprits are anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software...none of which are needed on a Mac.

If none of this works, then you should follow other normal software troubleshooting steps such as reinstalling macOS since something with your OS is broken if an Apple update won't install.
