Photo streaming shutting down

So, unless I manually move anything I want to save to iCloud-I’ll lose it? So not tech savvy. My brother in Ireland was astonished that I had over 10,000 pictures in my phone

My Photo Stream was a service that you could use to upload recent photos so that you could import them to another device.

You won't lose any photos as long as you still have the device they were uploaded from. Also, if you check to see if you have any photos in a My Photo Stream album and if you do, same them as described in Information about the My Photo Stream shutdown - Apple Support you won't lose anything. If you don't have any photos in that album or don't have that album on any device, you won't lose anything.
