Apple ID and screen time

How is it that my child can sign out of his iPad and sign in to a new Apple ID that he made up to circumvent screen time restrictions?

how is it that he can wipe my device clean from his device without my password?

how is it that he can sign out of his device when I have set up screen time to prevent this?

how is it that he can get past the screen time code without knowing the code?

screen time is useless it’s just an illusion of parental controls. It does nothing significant. It’s a facade. I wish it worked as advertised or as intended but I think software developers underestimate the ingenuity of kids.

I think Apple should hire my child to find the flaws in the screen time app/restrictions because I know he can get around any firewall they have put up.

It’s really frustrating that I have to spend so much time on trying to block my child from my other devices so that they don’t get accidentally reset and wiped clean.

Here are a couple of tips and solutions for some of the problems you are experiencing:

  • Kids resetting time limits on apps - In Contents & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases, disable "Allow Installing Apps" and "Allow Deleting Apps". This prevents apps from being deleted and re-installed which also resets the time limits.
  • Kids getting device passcode - Under App Restrictions, disable allow screen recording. Kids will start recording their screen and hand their phone to you to enter the passcode, then when you hand it back they have the passcode. If you see a flashing red icon on the top of the screen, you know it is being recorded.
  • Kids restoring device to factory settings to disable Screen Time - You will need to control their Apple ID password. They don't have a need for it as they won't be downloading apps. Change their password and don't give it to them. There still are other ways they can do a factory reset, especially if they have a computer, but this should help.
  • Kids changing device time to allow more time using apps: Go to Content & Privacy Restrictions > Location Services. Under System Services, ensure Setting Time Zone is toggled on. Tap “Don’t Allow Changes” at the top of the Location Services page.
  • Kids sending messages after the time limit is reached - You will need to disable Siri to prevent them from asking Siri to send the message. You can find this at Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and toggling off Siri & Dictation.

This is not all the workarounds, but by doing these measures it should reduce some of your problems. You probably have already done this, but under Contents & Privacy, make sure to disable "Passcode Changes" and "Account Changes". The child should not be able to wipe your device without knowing your Password, so make sure to change it often and watch out for that screen recording trick.

I don't have all of the answers for you and I agree that more work needs to be done on the Parental Controls.

Screen time is an absolute joke. I truly believe that Apple is now responsible for a huge number of young people becoming addicted to their phones. My teenage son can get around screen time in about five minutes. Asking for one more minute, resetting the time, and now creating a new iCloud account. I have to believe Apple has done this on purpose. Apple – you are one of the world premiere technology companies. It is a joke that screen time does not work for parents. As someone else posted here, you should just hire a bunch of teens to test screen time for you. You have promised the ability to limit the access that their children have on screens. But you have not delivered. You are failing your customers and you are failing a generation of young people.
