If you own an Apple TV (3rd generation) (2012–2013), then you will need a functional physical remote to help set up the software remote on iPhone or iPad, because it will ask to enter a code on the Apple TV.

If you can’t borrow one, then you may be able to buy a replacement remote from 3rd party resellers, if still in stock. Replacement remotes will have to be linked to the box again.
