2014 MacBook not allowing sign in to App Store even though proper user/pass is used

i completely erased contents of a 2014 MacBook. When attempting to sign into the App Store with the proper credentials, two things happen:

  1. Our other Apple devices show the 2FA protocol notification and the one time code
  2. the MacBook states the user/pass is incorrect

The credentials must be correct,

or else the 2FA protocol would not pop up.

Any ideas?

I’m going to guess that you loaded a very old macOS version here; something older than OS X 10.11.

If so… Enter the verification code at the end of the password.

If the password is ABCDEF and the verification code received is 123456, enter the following into the password field: ABCDEF123456

You will need to be quick about appending the verification code, as those do time out. (There are some other ways to sequence this.)

Where was this purchased? If a used purchase, then you would likely not be able to get in after the reset. The sis the site the pious owner should have used prior to selling it to you, including the iCloud logout: What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support. The seller should have known better.
