Cellular data icon

If I have the cellular data icon switched to on is it actually using my mobile data even if I'm not using my phone at the time? I never understood it.

Maybe.

Some apps may be have background processes that may use data even while not actively using the iPhone.

You can check which Apps use data in the Cellular Settings option.
