Do you still have access to one of your trusted devices? You can then generate a new recovery key

  1. Go to your Apple ID account page.
  2. Sign in with your password and trusted device.
  3. In the Security section, click Edit > Replace Lost Key.

If you don't have access to one of your trusted devices or to your apple id, you cannot sign in and you will need to enroll in account recovery

The key is wherever you stored it, and cannot be displayed again.

You can regenerate or disable the key, given sufficient access.

The fundamental reason to enable the 28-character recovery key is to block all password resets without that key.

A trusted device and the Apple ID password can re-generate the recovery key, or can disable the recovery key.

But with no password and no trusted device, or with no 28-character recovery key or a lost key, there can be no password reset.

Review the posts that have been provided already. Without another Trusted Device that is signed into your account, you do not get a different key. Your account is lost without the Recovery Key and it is not saved by Apple, so you would have needed to saved it on your own in a safe location.

If you’ve lost both the recovery key, and the Apple Account password and a trusted device, then you’re permanently locked out of that Apple Account. (Blocking all other password paths is the whole point of using the recovery key.)

If you have your password and trusted device, either generate a new recovery key, or disable the recovery key.

Help recovery of 28-character recovery key for access reset pw to MacBook

The only way that is possible is if you have an another Trusted Device, which is one that is signed into your Apple ID account. In that case, you can replace the lost key with the instructions provided by WheelieNick. Otherwise, your will not be able to access your account and will need to create a new Apple ID and that will result in losing all data that linked to that previous ID, including your purchase history and any data from your previous iCloud account including photos if you were using iCloud Photos.

This requires the Apple ID password and a trusted device.

If you set a recovery key, and have then lost the recovery key, and now also lack your Apple ID password and a trusted device, then you are permanently locked out of this Apple ID.

24 digits is not an Apple ID password Recovery Key. It’s probably a FileVault decryption key, which is not going to get you access into an Apple ID. The FileVault recovery key can allow you back into a Mac with an encrypted file system, if you no longer remember the Mac login credentials.

How to re-generate or how to disable the Apple ID Recovery Key (not the FileVault key) is included here:

If you cannot request a recovery key from another Trusted Device with the information already provided, then you will not be able to access your account. This is detailed in the Support Article about setting up the Recovery Key:

This gives you more control of your account recovery methods and can help prevent an attacker from gaining access to and taking control of your account. However, if you lose your recovery key and can’t access one of your trusted devices, you'll be locked out of your account permanently.

The information below is based on Apple's support article: Set up a recovery key for your Apple Account - Apple Support with quoted excerpts. Each section outlines the different situations and the strategies that may relate to use of a recovery key. If you are not familiar with trusted devices and numbers, see this support article —> Two-factor authentication for Apple Account - Apple Support

- If you still have access to your Apple ID and password but have lost your recovery key:

"You can generate a new recovery key from Settings or System Preferences on a trusted device." Refer to the steps in Set up a recovery key for your Apple Account - Apple Support about how to do this on different types of equipment (Apple equipment only).

- If you have forgotten your Apple ID password, have lost your recovery key, but still have access to a trusted device.

"you can try to regain access using your trusted device protected by a passcode." The process is outlined in this support article: If you forgot your Apple Account password - Apple Support This does not involve using a recovery key.

- If you have a forgotten password and you do not have access to a trusted device:

"you can use your recovery key, a trusted phone number, and an Apple device to reset your password."

- If you have lost your recovery key and have lost access to both your account and trusted items:

A recovery key is designed as an alternative to Account Recovery ( How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple Account password - Apple Support ) which is where Apple helps you regain access to your account. However, "when you generate a recovery key, you can't use account recovery." You can try to contact Apple (see: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support ), but to me the previous statement implies that setting up a recovery key excludes Apple from being able to do anything. Apple says: "Using a recovery key is more secure, but it means that you’re responsible for maintaining access to your trusted devices and your recovery key. If you lose both of these items, you could be locked out of your account permanently."
