The information below is based on Apple's support article: Set up a recovery key for your Apple Account - Apple Support with quoted excerpts. Each section outlines the different situations and the strategies that may relate to use of a recovery key. If you are not familiar with trusted devices and numbers, see this support article —> Two-factor authentication for Apple Account - Apple Support

- If you still have access to your Apple ID and password but have lost your recovery key:

"You can generate a new recovery key from Settings or System Preferences on a trusted device." Refer to the steps in Set up a recovery key for your Apple Account - Apple Support about how to do this on different types of equipment (Apple equipment only).

- If you have forgotten your Apple ID password, have lost your recovery key, but still have access to a trusted device.

"you can try to regain access using your trusted device protected by a passcode." The process is outlined in this support article: If you forgot your Apple Account password - Apple Support This does not involve using a recovery key.

- If you have a forgotten password and you do not have access to a trusted device:

"you can use your recovery key, a trusted phone number, and an Apple device to reset your password."

- If you have lost your recovery key and have lost access to both your account and trusted items:

A recovery key is designed as an alternative to Account Recovery ( How to use account recovery when you can’t reset your Apple Account password - Apple Support ) which is where Apple helps you regain access to your account. However, "when you generate a recovery key, you can't use account recovery." You can try to contact Apple (see: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support ), but to me the previous statement implies that setting up a recovery key excludes Apple from being able to do anything. Apple says: "Using a recovery key is more secure, but it means that you’re responsible for maintaining access to your trusted devices and your recovery key. If you lose both of these items, you could be locked out of your account permanently."

I need my recovery key so I can change my password

The Recovery Key is an optional way to secure your account that eliminates the ability to reset the Password using Account Recovery. It is not turned on by default. To use Advanced Data Protection, you will need to set up either a Recovery Key or Recovery Contact. If you lose the Recovery Key and don't have access to a Trusted Device, you will not be able to gain access to your account. Read the Support Article below for your options.

This gives you more control of your account recovery methods and can help prevent an attacker from gaining access to and taking control of your account. However, if you lose your recovery key and can’t access one of your trusted devices, you’ll be locked out of your account permanently.

Help recovery of 28-character recovery key for access reset pw to MacBook

The fundamental reason to enable the 28-character recovery key is to block all password resets without that key.

A trusted device and the Apple ID password can re-generate the recovery key, or can disable the recovery key.

No key, no reset.

There is no way to find your Recovery Key as it needs to be saved by you and should have been written down and stored in a safe place. Apple does not have it and it is not saved anywhere else. If you have another Trusted Device, which is signed into your account, then you can request another key. Without a Trusted Device or the Recovery Key, you will not be able to access your account.

Enter recovery key need

Did you lose your Recovery Key?

If so, you will not be able to access your Apple ID account and will be forced to create a new one. It is possible to generate a new Recovery Key, but you must already have another device that is signed into your account, which is not usually the case if you are currently being asked for the Recovery Key.

i have yet to see any where on a trusted device to replace it. I have 2 trusted devices and no way that says on applied.con to replace recovery key. Better yet mine 24 digits and not 28

Here is the step by step guide:

As stated the 24 digit key is not the Recovery Key used by your Apple ID.
