About 10%-15% of my music was purchased under our OLD STYLE Apple ID (single word - not email address format). iTunes won't let me get at it to re-download under my current Apple ID. Is there a way, withour haveing to re-purchase it all. Changing ID formats was not MY idea or MY fault.

No, that is not possible.
Your Apple ID is the personal account you use with all Apple products and services. It includes the email address and password you use to sign in, as well as the contact, payment, and security details that you use with Apple.
You can’t merge multiple Apple ID accounts.

Apple ID is XYZ. Buy a bunch of music as XYZ.
Apple makes you change your ID to XYZ@ABC. All that music you bought and paid for ... tough.
Any process available to recover ... nope.
