Claiming ignorance, I deleted all archived emails and trashed emails on Mail(Gmail) on my iMac. So all thousands of those emails and their folders are gone. I still see them on my iPhone Mail, and when I log into my Gmail account on Google, they are all still there. Not sure what I have done nor what I might possibly do to restore those emails. Any helpful suggestions?

What will removing the Gmail account from the Mac do? What will disconnecting the Mac from Gmail do? Will I be able to then restore those emails to my Mac? Is the web portal you refer to the Gmail account on Google?
Thanks. Before I was going to try this, I found that all my archived emails which had previously been deleted from Mail, are now back. Not sure why as I had not made any changes to my email account.

Do you have backup on any kind of backup?
If they still exist on the web portal, remove the account from your Mac. It should have deleted them everywhere, but since it didn’t, disconnect the Mac from Gmail.
I have an external hard drive that backs up my Mac on a regular basis but not sure if that includes Mail.
It will prevent the Mac from deleting them.
You can add it back, which will likely bring them back.
