Hi Dad1938,

welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community.

Re: Microphone on iPad works except FaceTime ?

Seems you are still using iOS 9, so your version of FaceTime may not be up-to-date.

Wondering if you are seeing any error messages when you use FaceTime.

There are a few trouble-shooting ideas below, that may or may not be helpful: (I don't have iPadOS 9 handy.)

(1) During a FaceTime call make sure your microphone is turned on, and not muted:

For iOS16: Change FaceTime audio settings on iPad - Apple Support

says

"Turn off the sound

When you’re on a FaceTime call, tap the screen to show the FaceTime controls (if they aren’t visible, then tap  to turn the sound off.

To turn the sound back on, tap the button again.

When your sound is turned off, your mic detects whether you’re speaking, and you’re notified that your mic is muted and that you can tap  to unmute it."

(2) Check if your wi-fi (or cellular) connection is strong enough for FaceTime:

Apple support's article: If you can't make or receive a FaceTime call on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

says: "Use a fast connection to avoid sound quality issues with FaceTime

Make sure that both you and the person that you call use a fast Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

If you use Wi-Fi, FaceTime requires a broadband connection".

(3)

While on a FaceTime call you could try turning the camera off to see if the audio signal is strong enough then:

Change FaceTime video settings on iPad - Apple Support

says:

"Turn off your camera

When you’re on a FaceTime call, tap the screen to make the controls appear, then tap (Tap it again to turn the camera back on.)

Even though your microphone is working in other apps, you might also want to check this article out for any tips:
