Incoming calls going directly to Voicemail on my iPhone

Please help! I have been wondering why I haven’t been getting any calls recently, then my mom told me the other night every time she calls it goes to voice mail, like immediately as if my phone were dead. I’m not sure why this is happening because I can send texts and receive them, but my calls just don’t come to my phone I’m so confused.

Only 1 person calls me and she says it goes straight to voicemail every time .She isn’t blocked . I have my phone turned on . Why can’t I get her phone call I get other incoming phone calls. Thanks.

Here is general information about your issue:

FIRST: Are there missed calls in Phone/Recents on the phone? If they are not the problem is in the network, because the calls aren’t getting to your phone. Contact your carrier:

  • check with your carrier that they don’t have a local outage, and that you didn’t have any settings that would have immediately invoked voicemail, such as call forwarding.
  • check up on them at Down Detector - Crowdsourced outage checker

If they are in Recents here’s what to check:

  • Check the MUTE switch on the left side of the phone, above the volume buttons. It should be towards the screen
  • Check the volume setting. With the Home screen displayed, press the VOLUME UP button on the left side of the phone. It’s above the VOLUME DOWN button.
  • Go to Settings/Phone. There’s a switch for Silence Unknown Callers. If it is on any calls from numbers not in your contacts will go directly to voicemail.
    • If you keep it on, in Settings/Phone make sure Dial Assist is enabled; it is needed to accurately match an incoming call to a contact.
    • Remember that banks, doctors and other professionals may not call you from the same number that you have in your contacts for them.
  • Also in Settings/Phone: Make sure Call Forwarding is off.
  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is off:
    • iOS 16: Open the Control Center and turn off Focus.
    • iOS 17: method unknown at this time
  • Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics. Make sure there is a sound assigned to Ringtone.
  • Go to Settings/Accessibility/Touch/Call Audio Routing and make sure Auto-Answer Calls is off.
  • Go to Settings/Screen Time/Communications Limits. Tap each of the 2 entries and make sure both are “Everyone"
  • Restart your phone-->Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  • If all else fails, talk your carrier into replacing your SIM card (thanks to ASC user DShelbyD)

If you are actually using the iOS 17 beta you can’t get help in this public forum.

The resolution for me was Verizon. Apparently when I got my new iPhone 16 Pro there is a setting that Call filter gets put on in Call Blocking and Identification. If this section is selected you will not get call at all from unknown numbers but they get sent to voicemail or blocked. This is an issue for me as I use this phone for personal & business and I get all kinds of calls I do not have in my contacts. If you have Verizon Call filter, do this: Settings/Apps/Phone/Call Blocking & Identification You will need to turn off Silence Junk Callers and if Verizon, also turn off Call Filter. Which sucks as this Verizon call filter has always been handy. I use Alexa to help me find my phone by ringing it. However with Verizon Call filter on, it goes to VM. Not helpful since I need to hear my phone ring...This did not happen on my iPhone 12 Pro with Call Filter on.

If you have AT&T, install AT&T Active Armor. I had it force installed on an old phone a few years ago and set it up. I guess with a recent update, AT&T started funneling calls through Active Armor even though I've never installed it on my new phone. I installed the app, resynced my contacts and found all the "blocked" calls in the Active Armor call log.

On the phone with tech support for an hour and a half for two days. They couldn’t figure out why and said it was bad service. I don’t live in a good area. I’ve excellent service. It was not that it was a cop out. So I put on X that I can’t use my phone to make phone calls and everybody else’s phone calls go to voicemail and customer support a Verizon isn’t helping at all. Talked with them through their messenger from X, come to find out my eSIM card was not activated. So go into your phone look for eSIM if your phone does not have an actual SIM card. I have iPhone 14 does not have an actual card it has an eSIM. I activated that and I was finally able to make phone calls. No one called me so I don’t know if it worked both ways.

That didn’t help my issue. I don’t have focus or dnd enabled, I don’t have my phone enabled to receive calls on other devices and I don’t have numbers blocked for those trying to call me and the calls still go to voicemail without ringing on my end. Now text messages are failing too. Thumbs down for iOs 18!! How can I reverse and go back to the previous version when all features of my phone were working properly?
