Siri activation beep removed after iOS 17 update

I’ve found numerous posts saying that the Siri activation beep was removed in various previous versions of iOS, but I still had this in iOS 16.

I’ve just updated to iOS 17 and this useful feature has disappeared.

I’ve tried restarting the phone and turning on the “listen for hey Siri” setting (as suggested in older posts) but this hasn’t worked.

I’d like the beep back, is there a setting I can’t find somewhere?

Thanks

Removal of the Siri beep was especially frustrating for my mom who is visually impaired. She always waited for the beep to confirm that Siri was ready and listening.

After much searching, I found a way to bring back the Siri beep in iOS 17:

  1. If your phone is on Silent Mode, turn Silent Mode OFF using the switch above the volume buttons
  2. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch
  3. Turn the Vibration setting OFF (it is likely on by default)

You should now hear a confirmation tone each time you activate Siri.

Ah, I see what you mean, sorry. Call me old fashioned, I still like the “hey siri” and wait for an answer (beep). If I ask a question, I’ll usually get an answer, but if I say “hey siri” then wait, I don’t know if it’s listening or not. Given historical experience, I like to know when it’s ready. I’m sure I’ll get used to it, it just feels like they’ve fixed something that wasn’t broken.

I don’t get an answer. If I’m looking at the phone, or holding it, then I can see the swirling colours or feel the haptics, but there is no audible sound/answer. Or, have I missed another setting for that? (I have selected the option for spoken responses when not in silent mode). But, if not looking at / holding the phone, I have no way of knowing if Siri is listening.

The reason there was originally a beep is that the phone processor wasn't powerful enough to both wake up and answer the question. It needed to be done in two steps. As the processors got more powerful, the phone could do it all at one go. I would imagine the sense was that it was more natural to be able to take to Siri like you would a person. But, of course by then, people had gotten used to the beep.
