when i try to import media into iMovie from my iMac desktop, the iMovie software shows nothing in desktop even though there are many files residing on my desktop. I've tried closing iMovie and reopening by holding option and command keys, but still nothing.

Thank you but perhaps I'm explaining wrong. I have jpg and movies files residing on my desktop that I would like to import into iMovie. When I click on the import media icon in iMovie it shows many folders located on my iMac, one of them being Desktop. When I click on Desktop, there are no files to select. It looks as if there is nothing on my Desktop even though there are.
