Does MAX support family sharing? It seemed to work until the app was lately updated. The App Store is a bit unclear, eligible apps are support for family sharing but it is not clear to me how to check on eligibility.

It doesn't. Don't think it ever has.
You can check the app details in the App entry on the App Store, and at the bottom, there should be a section titled "Supports". Apps that support family sharing will have that shown there. For example:
If it does not show Family Sharing there, or does not have the Supports section at all, it does not support Family Sharing.

It probably was not working over Family Sharing. The most probable answer is: you were simply sharing your HBO credentials with others in the Family Group directly.
