Updating macOS system on 2012 MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro 13", Mid-2012 with 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz) with 3MB L3 cache 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz) with 4MB L3 cache. What version of macOS can I update it? There must be another option besides buying a new MacBook...I'm not able to add any newer software or apps since they say it isn't compatible. I currently use macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6

Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and then on the download link for a higher OS. That model's maximum one is Catalina.

Catalina and above won't run 32-bit software; if you choose one of them, use Go64 as well.
