Read this article to learn about sharing iCloud+ --> Share iCloud+ with your family - Apple Support

It includes things about transitioning and having multiple subscriptions going at one time. The main thing is to ensure there is always one family level subscription at an adequate level being shared at all times. That way there is continuous coverage for the entire family group. So he would join and share, then you could cancel and be covered by his, or stay on your own with your 200GB.
