My Mac froze in the middle of an automatic, overnight, software update. I Have shut it down but it freezes at the same spot on the scroll bar. I also tried to reboot with Command+R and turning the power back on.
Shut it down and unplug it for about 2-3 minutes. Next, plug it back in and hold down the power button for about 15 seconds and see if it boots up.
By the way, do you have any of following types of third party apps installed:
