You need to clarify your question. You ask about Mail and Ventura but you say you're running macOS High Sierra 10.13.5. Which is it? FWIW, Mail is not a separate download, it installs with macOS.

I will download and hope, many thanks ... My older iMac crashed without hope. It will open in target disc so the data is still available, but things like lots of mail and so on are necessary to try to save. I was a bit surprised and concerned when I couldn't open mail on the replacement....
Sorry, 13.5.1, mental gap after days of trying to get Mail to open. I sw a long thread on this today, but now can't find it. Have tried a lot of things that don't work.
No problem, it happens. FWIW, the current version of Ventura is 13.6.1. You can try holding the shift key when opening Mail.
