How to create an new AppleID on an iPhone 6

My wife (iphone 6s, 15.8) and I (iphone 7, 15.8) have been sharing my AppleID account for years. I know this is supposed to be a no no, but we've not had any problems until now. Somehow imessaging is all screwed up. She's getting all my messages and I'm getting all her messages and I don't see any easy way to fix. So I'm ready to create a new AppleID for her.

Could someone please tell me the easiest way to do this. I have seen a suggestion to use the app store by creating a new ID rather than logging in, but loggin in is the only option. I will be replacing the 6s since it is no longer supported and the battery is shot, but I would like to fix this problem before replacing the phone.

Thanks for your help.

This support article tells you how to create a new, non-child Apple ID = create an Apple Account. --> How to create a new Apple ID - Apple Support

If all you want to do is create a new account, the article above tells you how. If you also wish for her to keep some data from the old account...

Apple has no formal account merging or transferring process. The things below will help you in doing ongoing or one-time transfer of as much as possible from one account to the other, but some thing can never be transferred (namely purchases), only shared.

You can use various iCloud sharing features for some ongoing data sharing.

Share folders with iCloud Drive --> Share files and folders in iCloud Drive on iCloud.com - Apple Support

Read How to use Shared Albums in Photos on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac - Apple Support about how to share photos.

Apps and media bought with one ID are permanently associated with that ID. Look into using Family Sharing to continue to be able to use items purchased with one Apple ID with other Apple IDs, and for some data sharing features.

- Family Sharing - What is Family Sharing? - Apple Support

- Set up Family Sharing - Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

The next section may sound tricky but it lets you merge some things on a device where you have already signed in with an old account but want to use a new account and incorporate data that is already on the device from the old account. Incidentally, the data will then propagate to other devices using iCloud with that new ID. (I haven't tried this with a computer but it may also work with a computer account signed into an old ID.)

If you have signed into the first ID on a device then fortunately when you sign out of that ID it asks you if you wish to retain the data from the old ID on your device (toggle the ones you want to on). If you keep data on the device then when you sign in with the other ID it will merge this data with the account signing into the device. You can later delete individual items from the old ID that you do not want. Similar information can be found in this post I have 2 apple IDs i want to merge them h… - Apple Community Note that only content physically present on the device like contacts, photos and videos will be retained. Meta data such as a game play scores that are tied to a specific ID or are only on a vendor's database remotely, will not be retained. Also turn off storage optimization before doing this. With Optimize Storage, smaller, space-saving photos and videos are kept on your device while all of your original, full-resolution versions are stored in iCloud. Make sure photo optimization is turned off so the full quality versions from the old account are actually on the device before merging the content into your new account. Manage your photo storage - Apple Support You can turn optimization back on again once you are fully using your new ID on the device.

Even though apps may remain on a device and may work for a while, you will not be able to update them or redownload them unless you buy them again with this ID or download them with this ID using Family Sharing.

Sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac --> Sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Mac - Apple Support

If another Apple ID is signed in you may need to enter the password for that ID to sign out of that ID first.

Apple (and many other big tech companies) is really pushing two factor. For any accounts created in the past few years you cannot disable it, or even set it up without it in the first place.

You can only turn it off if this is an older account (like my 19 year old one). Then if you do turn it on, Apple sends you a link for turning it off that works for 2 weeks. After that it is permanent.

Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

Apple does provide a notification email address:

From: About your Apple ID email addresses - Apple Support

Add or change a rescue [for most people called a notification address] email address

1. Sign in to appleid.apple.com.

2. Select Sign-In and Security.

3. Select Rescue Email. You might be asked to answer one or more security questions or enter your Apple ID password before you continue.

4. To add a rescue email address, select Add email. Then enter your rescue email address, then select Save changes. We send a verification to that address.

5. To change a rescue email address, enter the new address. We send a verification to that address.

6. Enter the verification code and click Continue.

If at any stage you don't get an expected verification see: If you didn't receive your verification or reset email - Apple Support

If you had a rescue email address on file when you upgraded to two-factor authentication or two-step verification, that email becomes your notification email. You can also use these steps to edit your notification email address. If you remove the notification email, you won't be able to add a new one.

Help a friend or family member as their account recovery contact - Apple Support

You'll have to ask Apple about the PC issue. From their documents, only Apple devices can be trusted devices since Apple has no control over how system software on PCs is designed (and vulnerabilities).

Unfortunately, you cannot add a Rescue email with 2-Factor authentification turned on and I can find no way to turn it off so right now there is no Rescue email option in the account as indicated in your post. I need a rescue email for her account so I can be notified when there are problems with her account because she is not a technical person. She primarily uses it as a phone, messages, camera and photos.

I don't see anyplace to add any kind of rescue/notification email. There is an option to add a contact but not sure how that works. If she has a problem, like when her appleid is locked, she will be notified on her email which she doesn't use very often.

There's this:

Set up an account recovery contact --> Set up an account recovery contact - Apple Support

- "An account recovery contact is someone who can verify your identity and help you regain access to your account and all of your data if you ever get locked out."

- You can select up to five recovery contacts for your account.

- Requires iOS 15 or iPad OS 15

- If you forget your Apple ID password or get locked out of your account, just follow the steps on your device to share the onscreen instructions with your recovery contact in-person or on the phone. Your recovery contact then shares a six-digit code that you enter on your device. After your identity is confirmed, you can reset your Apple ID password.

If your account is locked, Apple doesn't notify you by email. In fact for most account problem things Apple doesn't notify you. You find out when you try to log in. Apple does use an email address for verification purposes when changing passcodes and Apple ID, but those aren't "problems". With two factor the most frequent problem we see here are when somebody only has one trusted device and only one telephone number. If it's an iPhone and it gets lost then you have no way of receiving a verification code. The smart thing to do is make sure - in advance - that you have a second device, or at least multiple telephone numbers (a friend, a relative, or even a landline). There's a recovery contact too.

The other thing to do is NOT use your iCloud address as your Apple ID. If Apple is trying to send you an email related to a problem with your account, you won't be able to get it.

So all in all there's multiple things you can do in advance to avoid these issues arising.

Thanks Limnos. First of all, her soon to be old account is MY account which my phone is tied to. Also we have made no purchases and don't have anything stored in icloud. There is just the one icloud account. When I login to that account, of course it shows her device on the account. I am assuming that I will remove her device from the account if that doesn't happen automatically, otherwise we would have her phone tied to two accounts.

She just needs not to lose any messages, photos, etc.

The easiest way to "transfer" the information to her new account is to simply not have the phone erase when you sign out of it. When she logs in with her new ID and turns on iCloud, it will populate her iCloud categories with the information that is on the phone. She will then need to weed out things of yours she does not want but this will not affect your account because she is working in her account.

As for messages, I am not sure exactly how they work. I only did the new ID on a device thing once and I had no messages of any kind (I still almost never send messages or texts). Those may be user ID specific, or perhaps even telephone number specific. I didn't want the previous owner's messages anyway.

One thing you should do it make sure you have removed your ID from the Find My app and add hers, so the phone is noted as belonging to her.

Limnos, I got the new AppleID set up on my wife's iphone 6s. Just one problem. Apple automatically set it up with 2-factor authentification which I DO NOT want. I want to set up a rescue email. I am unable to setup a rescue email with 2-factor authentification turned on. And I can find no way to turn it off. Turning EDIT on in Password & Security doesn't work. Can't turn it off logging into the account on my pc. Some say to go to the enrollment email received but there was none. I have read that if not done within 2 weeks it cannot be undone.

Can you tell me how to do this please? Thanks.

The most common problem I experience with the AppleID is that after months of uninterupted work, Apple will start asking for me to input my AppleID password (without even accessing a service that requires it). This request just shows up in settings. Sometimes after entering the correct password I will be informed that the account has been locked. At this point I go my rescue email and open the email titled "Reset your password or unlock your Apple ID" and click on the link "Reset Password or

Unlock Apple ID" and unlock the account. This requirement to enter my password or unlock the account may go on for days or weeks and then will suddenly stop. In googling this problem there are lots of people who are asking "Why does Apple keep asking me for my AppleID password?"

Right now with 2-factor authentification turned on the iphone 6s every time I login to my wife's new AppleID account on my Windows PC, of course, she gets a popup on her phone asking to Allow this access. The problem is that it Apple thinks this is a device in Kentucky, when this PC is in MS with no VPN. And it does not pick up my Windows PC as a trusted device nor is there an option on the authentification pop up on the phone to trust the device. And I don't see any option in her account to add a trusted device. SO HOW DO I ADD THIS PC AS A TRUSTED DEVICE?

I will add a recovery contact to the account. If she gets locked out of her account (which based on our experience to date, is going to happen, can you please describe to me the process used to get back into her account.
