Google seem to have closed my account and email address. I went too Apple, system Preferences, Internet accounts, add Google and was then asked to authenticate my Google account in my browser (Chrome). I click on this but the browser does not open. Now what ?

What did Google support say when you talked to them? On first read, this sounds far more like a Google issue than an Apple issue.
Did you try a different browser?
Can you confirm this is on the iMac running macOS 10.15 shown in your equipment line? Google has dropped support for some older versions of macOS but I thought 10.15 remained on their "still supported" list.
