I keep getting message that my new bank card is invalid when trying to add to my Apple Wallet

My bank sent me a new card since the previous one was about to expire and I can’t add the new card to my wallet even if the card is active and I already did online transactions with different methods I keep getting a message saying invalid card

I just got a new phone and my debit card stopped working with Apple Pay. The card has not changed. I deleted it and tried to reenter it in Wallet and it keeps getting rejected as invalid. The only difference is my phone, therefore this seems like an Apple problem. I did call the bank and they could not see an issue, and confirmed the card is valid and active. So excited to figure out the resolution to the mystery...

Same thing on my end. My card expired in May. I got a new one about midway through the month, but I held off updating the payment method until last Friday since that was the last day of the month. The new card works everywhere except with Apple Pay. This inconvenience has forced me to use my Apple Card for Apple Pay transactions now. I have tried repeatedly to add the card for the past several days, but it will not go through. I called Apple and my bank and there are no problems according to the agents on both ends. I was told though that Apple apparently has some sort of unannounced safeguard in place that will not allow cards with the same number but different expiration and CVV code to be entered in the Wallet too close together. Supposedly, the error should magically go away after seven days. Today is the seventh calendar day since I attempted the change, and it still won't work. Maybe they mean seven business days. Either way, it's ridiculous!

When a card is entered into Apple Wallet these are usually the basics that are done to make sure the card is valid.

  1. Basic checks — card number, card is on Payment Network, card is active,
  2. CVC verification — issuer validates security code
  3. AVS Check — Address Verification Service determines validity and matches address provided and known addresses
  4. Velocity check - (optionally) tried to enter card too many times

The bank and Payment Network Operator (Mastercard , Visa etc.) perform those checks. If they fail, the card is <Invalid>.

Did you remember to activate the new card? Have you recently moved and an address is incorrect? Have you recently travelled and your iPhone is set to the wrong region/country? Are you using a VPN or have antivirus or security software installed?

Same problem. Back and forth with Apple and the bank and one keeps blaming the other. Looks like an issue affecting newly issued card, since I was able to remove and re-add older ones (including one credit card from the same bank).

Don't even bother going through their 1st line troubleshooting (where they usually blame your device), it's a waste of time and effort.

This is something that needs to be sorted between Apple and Visa, I am very surprised they haven't acknowledged the problem yet.

Regions, iOS updates etc are what you need to do on your end. The bank has to have the card ready to add to Apple Pay. The error of invalid, indicates a compatibility with Apple Pay. For example, when I enter a card issued by a bank that does not support Apple Pay, I’ll get that message. The bank just needs to reset somethings on their end and it should be able to be added.

Have you looked in your Wallet in Previous Cards to see if it’s listed there?

Same thing happening to me "Invalid Card" - called my bank and even Visa, no one says it is them. My ATM card expired and was just trying to replace it in my wallet with the new one but keep getting Invalid Card. Bank says they get nothing coming from apple, my card can be used on cashapp and venmo just fine but not apple pay. And only once my card expired. My new card has the same number but different expiration and security code, however every time I try and re-add the card it auto populates the old expiration date(which is expired). It does allow me to change it to the new date however this makes me wonder if there is something on apple's end. I have done 90min of trouble shooting with apple including changing regions and deleting my wallet and adding back however everyone is pointing fingers at each other at this point with no solution.

If the error is invalid card, Apple is submitting your name, card number and expiration date, nothing else, to the Payment Network Operator (Visa, MasterCard, American Express etc.) for validation. If the card is validated, other information is sent for verification including iPhone information, CVV security code and some usage data.

The most common reason for a failed validation is the card wasn’t activated or PNO, doesn’t show it as activated. The bank may show it as activated, but PNO doesn’t.
