GarageBand, evo 4, no sound

Ok…

Got GarageBand all up to date, iOS too

using an iPad 4th gen 12.9 pro

evo 4

set up

Guitar - guitar cable

guitar cable - into guitar port on evo4

evo4 usb port - usb c cable

esb c cable into usb port in ipad

problem

No sound comes out of iPad when evo4 in play
i can go to the AMP section in garageband
ipad recognises I’ve evo attached
i can pick amps and effects as normal
when i play the guitar, no sound is heard from the ipad
i built a quick drum track and hit record on the guitar/amp track
the drum track doesn’t play out either
i can see the lines in GarageBand, indicating that my guitar is being recorded along with the effect pedals
when i stop recording and press play - no sounds
when i remove the usb cable from evo 4 to iPad, it plays all tracks and effects out normally via the iPad speakers

any help appreciated…thanks, iain
