Reverse Latency on iPad Pro iOS 17.4.1, model 12.9” 4th gen. in Simple Setup
I have become very frustrated that my iPad Pro has been having a bizarre reversed latency problem using a simple digital audio interface signal. Reverse, you ask? Yes. I’m recording very carefully in GarageBand to a metronome or a drum track, and also frequently collaborating on video using the Acapella App by mixcord. My monitoring tells my classically trained ears that I’m right on the beat, but when I play back my recordings, I feel like I have Alzheimers because it sounds like I’m rushing just ever so slightly ahead of the beat ALL THE TIME, and it is driving me crazy. I’ve tried everything I can think of to fix this, so hoping someone has ideas on how to fix, what cable or new device that works better? Here goes:
I’m not using super complicated setup either. I am using a small digital interface called a JamPlus, which connects my guitar to the iPad using a USB-mini to a USB-C cable. The output on the Jam is a mini port, one headphone jack for monitoring, and the guitar input port. This setup worked perfectly for a long time, but the last 6 months or so, I started noticing my takes were rhythmically horrifying, and I know it’s not my playing. Visually in garage band, I can see my articulations about a 64th to 32nd note ahead of all my other tracks.
I have even tried a Mini/USB-A cable that plugs into a hub that then goes into IPad with a USB-C. Same problem. I’ve turned off background updates, notifications, cleaned out storage, tried 5 different cables, and it is persistent. Also happening currently, when I plug the JamPlus into the iPad, particularly in the Acapella video collab app, I get an error message that says “plug in headphones to record,” the iPad is not even recognizing the device properly. I’ve been rebooting, reinstalling, poring thru settings on different apps, but I am at wits end.
Acapella is made for iPhone/iPad only, and right now I’m having to use my iPhone 15 ProMax, but it’s small and much harder to use vs the 12.9 iPad Pro. My iPhone 15 Pro Max registers about 6 ms latency in Acapella (no noticeable effect), iPad Pro 22-28 ms, but I sound consistently AHEAD of other tracks. Same thing in GarageBand.
I don’t know how to use Logic Pro on the iPad yet. I am a home-based amateur musician, not a major home DIY audio engineer. I like these two apps I’ve been recording with since 2019, and I’ve learned how to use them pretty well. My research indicates a lot of people are having a similar problem and it really hasn’t been fixed, far as I can tell. I think the problem is with Apple and this device not the apps and not the JamPlus. And I’m pretty darn sure I’m not rushing the beat all the time for 6 months now, either. 😉
