Unable to upload the song to GarageBand

I am tying to load a song from Music to Garage Band on my Mac to convert to a ring tone.

I am unable to upload the song to Garage Band. When I try to upload from the Desktop, the song is greyed out. When I try from Music on my iPhone, I get an error message that I must sign into iCloud, which I am (I think!)

I have followed the instructions on five different websites, including Apples, with a continued lack of success.

Any help would be appreciated.

To be able to add a song to an audio track in GarageBand 10.4 on your Mac, you just have to drag the song from Music to the open GarageBand window onto the exiting audio track or into the empty track area to create a new audio track. If Music is syncing with iCloud, download the song from iCloud, before you try to add it.

But you can only use songs in GarageBand that do not have any digital rights assigned. You can neither used streamed songs from Apple Music nor any songs, where the Info for the song is shown "protected" in the media kind.

Use only songs from audio files you own, songs you have created yourself in GarageBand or recorded with the microphone or ripped from unprotected CDs.

Thank you for your easy to follow advice.

I have successfully created the track, converted it to ACC, renamed it with m4r, and successfully placed it in Files on my iPhone 14 Pro.

I am getting closer!

From what I have read, the iPhone should now recognise that the file is a ring tone, but it doesn't appear on my ring tone list.

I have shut off the phone and restarted it, but that common fix didn't work.

Any advice as to finish this off would be appreciated.
