Configuring AirPort Extreme to Use a Samsung External SSD

Yes, I still use an airport extreme as my router, I find it great for my home. Now I want to attach a Samsung 2 terabytes SSD. But I can’t seem to make it work, I cannot see the hard drive from my computer and even less from my iPhone using the app FileBrowser. I’m not an advanced user and I could use some advices to achieve this.AirPort is running 7.9.1 it the last model that was available back in the day. My phone is an iPhone running 17.5.1 computers run win11.

How is the Samsung SSD formatted? Not sure? The documentation that came with the drive will likely tell you.

If you have a Mac, connect the SSD directly to your Mac and wait for the drive to appear on the Mac's desktop. Right-Click on the drive icon and then choose Get Info. Look for FORMAT and report on your results.

Sorry, I don't have a PC here to tell you how to do this with a PC, but I'm betting that the SSD is formatted to work with Windows and not Mac.

The bottom line is that the SSD needs to be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)....also known as HFS+....or FAT 32 to be compatible with the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.

You are welcome!

Not sure if you are proceeding with this or not......but if you are, please note that the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is an old and slow USB 2.0 design, meaning that will run at about half the speed or less than the USB 3 port on the SSD is delivering.

So, the AirPort will only deliver a fraction of the performance of which the SSD is capable.
