Can’t add family (kid) watch to HomeKit app

We bought door locks that work with Apple HomeKit. I have successfully set up my watch and my iPhone, but my kid’s stand alone Apple Watch has no Home app.

I have sent an invitation from the lock app to the kid’s iCloud email address. I have also sent an invitation via text (iMessage) to the kid’s watch. So far, no luck.

Has anyone had any success with this problem?

Am I really returning this lock and switching us all over to Android?! Ugh.
