I am getting notice that my iCloud storage is nearly full. However I have stopped photo sharing years ago and find I have nearly 500mgb of photos still there. They are on my Photos app on my MacBook Pro. How can I get rid of them?

Provided you no longer sync to iCloud, you can delete your images at iCloud.comwithout affecting those photos on your Mac.
