How can I free up storage space on my Mac with macOS Monterey?

I'm no expert so please treat me kindly! have a Mac (24-inch, M1, 2021) running macOS Monterey 12.7.4 and it's running short on storage with 47GB remaining of 494GB. I thought all my photos were on iCloud - the iCloud drive is taking 106GB of the storage but the system data is taking nearly 250GB with Apps (39GB) and MacOS (22GB) taking up most of the rest. What can I do to free up storage space? and isn't the system data taking a surprising amount of storage?
