for a keyboard, you can use any-old adapter, such as these on amazon at 2 for US$10:

shop carefully, the reverse adapters are also available.

For drives or displays, data rates are too fast for those cheap adapters, and a real adapter such as the one for sale in the Apple store are recommended.
