Sonoma 14.5 upgrade moved files from my MacBook to iCloud and need to get them back

Not sure if the upgrade was the culprit but without any intervention on my part all my files were moved from my MacBook to iCloud. I want them back on my MacBook. How do I do that?

An option with iCloud is to "Optimize Storage" to save storage space on a disk. This is done with Photos by keeping only smaller versions of pictures locally, and relying on iCloud Photos to keep the full sized files for use as needed. For iCloud Drive, files are kept locally, but if "Optimize" is chosen, then some files may be deleted from the drive, if storage becomes low, and they will be brought back as needed.

Pretty clever, but there are downsides to the "Optimize" choice. For one thing, backups to your Mac will only backup what's on the Mac, and some files may be missing, and you don't really know which ones. And for another, as you've discovered, if you were to end syncing, then you would be left without those missing files that are only at iCloud. This is why there is that warning that comes up when you turn off Sync.

I use "Optimize" on my iPhone and iPad, so I don't have to buy huge amounts of expensive storage when I buy a device. But I never use "Optimize" on my Mac--I try to buy enough (also expensive) internal drive to be able to keep the original files. Since, like you, I use a laptop, I try to clear out space on my internal drive by carrying a very small 2TB SSD for files and backups that I don't use much. I keep the Photos Library and other high use files as Originals locally, as well as in iCloud. There's nothing wrong with syncing, which I certainly do, but I want them fully available for backups.

What do you see that makes you think this? I ask, because iCloud Drive is a synchronization service, and it can look like files were "moved to iCloud," when instead they were copied to iCloud. In that case, the iCloud service also maintains the files in an invisible folder on the Mac-- they aren't erased from the Mac. That makes them available to your phone and iPad through the internet, but instantly available on the Mac. Even though you see the file in the iCloud Drive folder, you're really loading the file directly from your hard drive.

The settings are in the Mac System Settings>Apple ID>iCloud Drive. What do yours say? You may choose not to "Sync This Mac."

Thanks so much. I think I found the issue-I clicked Have Icloud help manage storage and then when I clicked to unsync (do not have suffucuent space in icloud and do not want it) it said my files would be deleted. And on my Mac under favorites, my desktop and doument links to my hard drive were gone. I am pretty sure the storage manager moved them (I had NO IDEA this would happen because I always saw it as sync only). I panicked when it said icloud files would be deleted from all devices. Can you explain? I have spent HOURS copying back to the hard drive (which was recommended everywhere I read). I have still not turned off the Storage manager until I am certain I will not lose files. Any explanation would help thanks. I want to turn off storage manager.
