What are the common causes of IMAP/SMTP connection failures on Mac?

I'm having problems sending and receiving emails on my Mac. its something with my servers. all the accounts seems to have connection failures. when I check the accounts for details it states that the accounts are failing to connect to IMAP/SMTP. I don't know how to fix it.
