File on MacBook won't sync to iCloud.

When I open Finder on my MacBook Air, I see a gray circle next to iCloud Drive, and the detail shows that a tiny 72kb file is not fully syncing with iCloud Drive (tiny pie-shaped sliver of white). Later, that information is replaced to show yet another file is not syncing. I am worried that perhaps many files are not syncing, but don't know how to check this out. I have huge amounts of unused iCloud storage.

Later, that information is replaced to show yet another file is not syncing, this one much larger. Later still, another file. I am worried that perhaps many files are not syncing, but don't know how to check this out. Also in Finder, I see a "cloud" symbol next to my "Desktop" folder. Perhaps things on the desktop are not syncing? I have huge amounts of unused iCloud storage. Very fast fiber optic internet connection. I've tried a restart. Looked into iCloud.com (not sure what to even look for there). Thanks for any thoughts.
