Change AppleID email address - what happens in 2024?

I would like to change the email address to which apple receipts and security notifications are sent. To do this it seems the only way is to change my appleid - seems very scary, after having been an apple customer for years and also my family is associated with my account.

So the questions are:

What happens in 2024 when one changes their appleid?

What does one need to do before/after changing it?

Here's potentially what's at stake:

  • App logins: Music, Messages
  • iCloud data: messages, email, files, photos, videos
  • Family sharing
  • Screentime setups

So bottom line, is changing your appleid just that?

Or does it have effects that are, shall we say, rather unpleasant?

Didn't it? I said, "The support article Change your Apple ID - Apple Support outlines various methods for changing the email address (Apple ID) you use for your Apple Account while retaining everything in your account."

Simply follow the directions in the article and you don't lose anything. Clear now?

The reason people lose data and then fuss horribly is because instead of changing their ID they create a second account with the new address instead of changing it on the old account. No, Apple does not say on its create an ID article "DO NOT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREATING AN ACCOUNT IF YOU ARE SIMPLY UPDATING THE ADDRESS YOU USE FOR AN ALREADY EXISTING ACCOUNT." I suppose they need to take the approach that more companies are using such as saying do not drink something that is clearly poisonous, or do not swallow something that is sharp.

Thank you - this is the information I was looking for. Lot's of talk about losing data from non-apple sources, and not much about this same topic from Apple. While the information from Limnos is detailed and useful, it didn't answer my questions. It would be great if Apple Support articles could clearly articulate these reassurances. they briefly touch on it but I found it unconvincing.
