Books highlights and notes disappeared

I have been reading a downloaded pdf book in Books, highlighting text and making notes. Everytime I make a note I bookmark the page. I’m doing this on my iPad pro (up to date iOS). This has successfully sync-ed to my Mac (OS Catalina) except for notes made after 12th August.

I’ve gone in to settings and Books preferences and checked all the correct buttons are switched to green on both the iPad and the Mac. I’ve restarted both.

No change on my Mac but now all the post-12th August notes have disappeared from my iPad as well as the bookmarks

How do I restore these missing notes and sync them to the pdf in Books on my Mac?
