Video freezes and/or is choppy Mac Mini M2 Pro - Definitely not overloaded

So, having gone from i7 iMac to M2 Pro Mac Mini, I am wondering why I bothered. The video playback is a mess. Both online and offline video regularly stops (audio continues) and restarts. Offline video and online video... Prime, Netflix, Youtube, TV etc etc. Apalling for what is supposed to be a very capable platform. I have seen much on here that simply does not fit. Not excessively overloaded - more than half memory available at any point in time (I have 32GB). No anti-virus, I have killed the CleanmyMac health checker... Followed all the suggestions but no change, no benefit. This is Sonoma 14.1. Mind you, I see a lot of issues at Ventura too. Why did they not correct the situation? I can run Entrecheck but it raises NO major issues and the remainder are kext minor issues but no one seems to be able to definitely say what can be removed, or indeed whether it is any benefit. Have I made a terrible mistake moving to Apple Silicon?

Have you run Disk Utility's Disk First Aid on all connected drives?

In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

CleanMyMac aka " BrickMyMac "

It is suggested to Start Over From Scratch

Erase your Mac and reset it to factory settings

This method will remove the User Account ( Home Folder ) and everything in the Home Folder

It does not touch the current version of macOS presently installed on the computer

Bye the by - there are some reports circulating that there is a Malware / Trojan masquerading as CleanMyMac

All the more reason not to use CMM aka BMM

Avoid at all costs unless it is absolutely Required for the External Drives to function

macOS is very able and equipment to manages External Drives without the often Buggie and outdate Third Party Software interfering with this process

/Library/Application Support/WDSmartWare

[Not Loaded] WD1394HPDriver.kext - com.wdc.driver.1394HP (1.0.8)

[Not Loaded] WDUSBHPDriver.kext - com.wdc.driver.USBHP (1.0.10)

BDAqua, thanks for your reply. I have checked all of the connected disks and all have reported back as successful with no errors. Just in case it is useful all my drives are APFS, both internal and external.

I have attached Entrecheck report below. One "interesting" thing to note - if the mouse is jiggled over the window concerned, whether a Safari window for online video, or the TV window for offline, the video restarts quite often immediately.

I am not running any VPN, anti-virus or cleaning apps. I do have CleanmyMac X but am not running it and have ensured it does not start up, even the pesky health check monitor.

So... Entrecheck

Problems with online video could be caused by poor broadband connections or dodgy wi-fi. All versions of the mini for over a decade appear to be prone to poor wi-fi signals.

There could also be a problem or incompatibility with the video codecs you are using.

I have got the base model M2 booting off a USB 3.0 SSD and it edits and plays back all video up to 4K flawlessly.

Where do you keep the offline videos . . . on the internal or an external SSD?

Aug 24, 2024 2:22 AM in response to Ian R. Brown

Ian, this video issue occurs on both online and offline video. So what comes off my SSDs (external) as well as what I play over the internet. My connection is consistently 135MB/s. Wifi signal (the Mac says) is excellent. All my own video (i.e. offline stored on SSDs is H264. However, I don't know enough about codecs to go to lower level.

I am wondering whether the migration assistant has graded something from my previous i7 iMac. It certainly seems to have pulled a number of kexts across that I do not believe would have been in the Sonoma base build but I do not know enough about what they do or whether they are actually loaded to know if they may be causing any issues.

Thanks hcsitas. Quick query if I may... Does the option to erase and reset to factory on Apple Silicon actually do that to the extent of removing all potentially rogue kernel extensions etc? Does it really take it back to the pristine condition it was in when I first opened the box? This may well be the best option if I want to be absolutely certain of not dragging around stuff from several Macs ago it seems...

So, here's the thing. Apparently this is an issue that has been around for some time. It has to do with Spaces and when you have larger displays. If you manage your displays as separate spaces there is no choppiness or other issues at all. Everything works well. Of course, you do have to cope with the *features* that separate spaces bring such as apps opening on the last space used, the menu flicking between displays and the dock too.

If you turn off management as separate spaces, that's when the choppiness/freezing occurs.

Hi BDAqua. These are not there. As suggested (strongly) I did a full factory reset. This issue is a known one with Spaces (or lack of them). It was in Monterey and Ventura and confirmed as being in earlier versions of Sonoma too. I have 14.6 and it still remains. Switch off displays have separate spaces and the stuttering commences.

I reduced my resolution on both screens from 3200X1800 to 2560X1440 (so effectively less pixels than a single 4k screen (Isn't it called DQHD or similar) and with separate spaces off it fails. Separate spaces on - perfect, no stutter on 4K video run in 4 windows simultaneously and with other heavy apps running.

Video freezes and/or is choppy Mac Mini M2 Pro - Definitely not overloaded
