Please help! Want files backed up on icloud but should I save them in documents as well?

I have all my files in my iCloud, this was after I got nervous as someone told me not to have files on my desktop. So I have moved everything to iCloud on my desktop and laptop.

Now I'm nervous as they are only on iCloud and not stored on the actual machine.

So I thought if I move them to documents then iCloud will back up documents, so I went to iCloud settings and ticked the desktop and documents button.

Now when I moved my files from iCloud to documents, it created another folder , documents - selinas Mac

BUT they disappear from iCloud now?]

Im so confused can someone please help.

I just want my files on my iMac and laptop machines but I also want them in iCloud and now I've started this process I've gotten all confused.

Also I know some people would want their laptop and iMac different - but I don't, I want to go on and see the same things in the same place.

This is what started all of this ! :(
