Desktop & Documents Toggle Won't Stay On - 2021 M1 Pro Macbook Pro -macOS Sonoma 14.6.1
Yesterday I decided to start using iCloud Drive's “Desktop and Documents” feature on my MacBook because I wanted all files saved on My Desktop and in my Documents to be easily accessible from my iPad and my iPhone without having to manually copy those files into iCloud. I also wanted to do this so that all of the important files on my Mac would be backed up in the cloud while also remaining on the Hard Drive.
When I went to System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Drive and clicked the toggle for Desktop and Documents, everything seemed to go according to plan, my local Desktop and Documents folders were "migrated" to the iCloud section of Finder and I was able to see those documents via the Files app on my iPad and iPhone. This worked as intended for most the day.
However, later that same day I was looking at my storage and realized that there seemed to be way too much storage being taken up by apps (325 GB), even though when I added up the totals of all the apps on my Mac it only added up to about 28 GB. So I decided that most of that used storage must have been junk files.
So, at that point I used “Clean My Mac X” to search for and delete junk files. But for some reason, after Clean My Mac X finished, I was automatically signed out of iCloud on my Mac and every time I would try to sign back in it would say “Failure to Authenticate.” So, I just restarted my Mac and was subsequently able to sign back in to iCloud.
HOWEVER, now my Mac has reverted to keeping separate “Desktop” and “Documents” on my local Drive rather than iCloud - i.e. those local folders on my Mac don’t seem to be syncing with iCloud Drive anymore.
I went back to iCloud Drive settings, but now that toggle for “Desktop and Documents” is refusing to remain toggled. As soon as I flip it on, it just switches right back.
I’ve tried all of the following as recommended by the Apple Support Team:
- Restarting my Mac
- Manually shutting down and rebooting my Mac
- Signing in via Safe Mode
- Signing out and back into iCloud
- Reinstalling the OS from Recovery Mode
But despite all of that, the problem persists. but the problem persists.
I also tried to open terminal and execute the "killall bird" command, but that doesn't seem to be a command Terminal recognizes anymore. However, when I run the command log show --predicate 'process == "bird"' --last 1h it comes back recognizing that there 40 errors. I don't know enough about computer coding to know what that means, I just saw this blog post and figured I'd give it a try: https://preslav.me/2023/09/12/howto-fix-stuck-icloud-syncing-macos-part-2/.
I have a call scheduled with Apple Support tomorrow so I am hoping they can help me fix the problem. But in the meantime... Does anyone have any idea Any idea what is causing this problem? And any further suggestions to resolve it?
Thanks in advance!
