What exactly am I getting for my iTunes Match subscription that I paid for? I can't cancel my Apple Music subscription?

I was told by Apple support that with a iTunes Match subscription, I could play my own music after canceling my Apple Music subscription. Now I'm told I need both subscriptions. Which is it? If I need both, what do I need iTunes Match for?
