Can I sync music from an iPod to a MacBook Pro?

I've attempted to sync this old iPod to my MacBook Pro and though my Mac recognizes there's a connection from an iPod, no icon appears on my desktop AND WORSE YET...It prompts me to retire this iPod. HOWEVER, doing so will wipe the hard drive and I'll lose all 580 songs which we've paid for! Any hope of retrieving this music so that I can save them in iTunes?
