My songs are visible from my iPod nano on my Mac Pro, but they won't play or allow me to edit.

I'm trying to delete some songs from my iPod nano 5th generation but my Mac Pro doesn't seem to recognize my iPod. When connected it shows my iPod and my song library but no song will play and nothing happens when I right click on a song to either move it or delete it.
