photo thumbnail size in ipad os 18

Have just updated to iPad OS18 on my iPad Mini 6 and photo thumbnails are tiny! They can be enlarged, but only temporarily. How can I get them to stay a decent size so I can actually see them?!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I don't even have the 3 across option this is the worst feature they could have done especially for people who are vision impaired. Apple please fix this so we can make it remember how we want to see our photos NOT how you think we should.

I’ve just had a look, and yes, in every album or utility there are five photos across. But in the main library (photos)there are 11 tiny ones across. Like you, if I zoom to five, every time I go off to another app and come back it’s returned to eleven, which are far too small to be useful on an iPad Mini.

Thanks for replying.

Before software update when iPad mini was in landscape mode I used to get five thumbnails in a row in the Photo app.

Now I get Eleven! Which means they’re very small and not a lot of use.

It’s possible to zoom them so you get five in a row again, but it only lasts while you are in the app and it’s a bit of a pain to have to do it every time you go back in.

Steps to adjust the number of thumbnails on the screen.

  1. Open the Photos app
  2. Scroll up until the screen is filled with photos
  3. A double arrow will appear at the bottom of the screen
  4. Ensure the “All” option is highlighted
  5. Press the double arrow
  6. Select “View Options”
  7. Select “Zoom In” or “Zoom Out” to increase or decrease the size of the thumbnails

Using my iPad Air I am able to reduce the 11 images to 3 by pinching out to enlarge the images.

However, I am frustrated with this update on a number of issues, but to keep on subject, the new Album configuration is extreme difficult for me to use. The icons and text are too small for me to read or see without a magnifying glass. I cannot pinch this out to enlarge the size of the album categories!

I apologize for the following because it is dysfunctional, but it has to be said. For Company who should recognize and help those of us with disabilities such as age related macular degeneration should know better and be more sensitive with regard to this types of update mistakes. Further I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings at Apple, but maybe you need to take a lesson from other digital companies such as Adobe who issue BETA mirror application and solicit feedback on their updates prior to launch.

On my iPad, the default in "Recently Saved" is 5 across. In "Photos" (Library) it's 7 across. If I zoom to 5, go to another view, and come back it is still 5. If I close Photos and re-open it, or if I just switch to another app and switch back, the Library view goes back to 7.

Seven's not so bad on an iPad, but that's really tiny on a phone. Let Apple know here:

Perhaps you're not looking at the Library screen. When you first open Photos in looks like this:

which is the Photos screen, as you see at the top. Above here is the Library, and below are various Collections.

If you scroll up, you get this:

which is the Library view with the title "Library" at the top. It's in the Library view that you see the arrows for sorting and the options menu.

And it's in the Library view where you can change the size of the Library thumbnails.
