playlists gone unless you pay for itunes

I was wondering why I had lost my iTunes playlists that I have had for years and paid for each song. I found out from Apple that i no longer can have my playlists unless i pay a monthly fee. I had no idea and does anyone know what else can be used for all of these songs I purchased, paid to them to own and be able to make playlists?
