I saw another thread that said the apple store will replace a battery for an iPod classic, but when I went to the apple store today they said they don't do that service anymore.
Was the person who spoke to me misinformed? Or is that accurate now?
Are there "approved" third parties that do this?

No, the Apple representative was not misinformed. Apple no longer service the iPod Classic.

There are. Your best course of action is to search online for a company that can replace the battery and that is local to you. (There's no point in my recommending a company near to me if I'm on a different continent to you.)
