Removed a person from Family Sharing and books they bought disappeared.

A member of our family passed away, so I removed them from Family Sharing. After I did that, all the books they bought, using the shared payment account, disappeared from our iCloud books library. It seems odd that these books should disappear since all books in the family are bought using the same payment method. In other words, the deceased family member *chose* the books but my card was used to buy them. Can I get them back without buying them all again?
